The only captain to win everything

Three trophies define the white-ball era: the T20 World Cup, the ODI World Cup and the Champions Trophy. Exactly one captain in history has lifted all three — Mahendra Singh Dhoni, in 2007, 2011 and 2013. Add five IPL titles with Chennai Super Kings and you have the most decorated leadership career the game has produced.

Defining moments

Joburg, 2007. A 26-year-old captain with no coach’s playbook handed the final over of the first T20 World Cup final — against Pakistan, against Misbah-ul-Haq — to the unknown Joginder Sharma. India won by five runs. The IPL was born off the back of that night.

Wankhede, 2011. In at No. 5 above the in-form Yuvraj Singh in a World Cup final chase, out of form himself, Dhoni played the coldest innings of his life: 91* off 79 to end India’s 28-year wait.

The finishing formula. Dhoni turned the run chase into a science: take it deep, keep wickets in hand, target the one bowler you own, and back yourself to hit 15 off the last over. For a decade, no total against India was safe until he was out.

Playing style

Unorthodox everything: a bottom-hand grip strong enough to launch the “helicopter shot,” a keeping technique textbooks reject and results vindicate, and a resting heart rate that never seemed to change whether the equation was 6 off 12 or 16 off 6. Behind the stumps he redefined speed — his 195 international stumpings remain the world record by a distance, many completed in around a tenth of a second.

Dhoni’s calm made him corporate India’s favourite face for two decades. His portfolio now spans team ownerships across multiple sports, an agritech venture, fitness chains, consumer brands and a beloved association with CSK that transcends contracts. Editorial estimates place his 2026 net worth at around $127 million — second among all cricketers, behind only Sachin Tendulkar.
