The UAE Are One Win From a Women's Asia Cup Semi-Final

When this tournament started we said the interesting half of the draw was the Associate half. Ten group matches later, that has turned out to be true in a way the fixture list did not promise: the UAE go into their final group game with a semi-final place on it.

Here is exactly where it stands.

The two teams already through

India won Group A with three wins from three and a net run rate of +5.471 — a number that says more about the margin than the results do. They beat Thailand by 94 runs, Hong Kong by 137, and then bowled Pakistan out for 55 and chased it in seven overs’ worth of batting for the loss of three wickets.

Sri Lanka won Group B with three from three, and had to work considerably harder for the last one — 115/6 chasing Bangladesh’s 114/8, won by four wickets on 6 September.

Group A: one match left, and Thailand need someone else’s result

Thailand have finished their group on 2 points. The one fixture left is Pakistan v Hong Kong, and it decides whether Thailand’s tournament is already over.

• Pakistan win — they go to 4 points and take the semi-final place. Thailand are out.
• Hong Kong win — Pakistan, Thailand and Hong Kong all finish on 2 points, and net run rate separates them. Thailand sit at −2.050 and Pakistan at −0.569, so Hong Kong would need to win heavily enough to move themselves up from −3.575 and drag Pakistan down far enough for Thailand to slip through.

That is a thin path, and it depends entirely on a match Thailand are not playing in. But it is not closed.

Worth recording: Thailand’s win came in the tournament’s opening match, 120/9 against Hong Kong’s 114/7 on 28 August — six runs, and the only Associate-versus-Associate result in Group A.

Group B: the UAE play for it directly

This is the cleaner situation and the better story. Bangladesh and UAE are level on 2 points with one match between them left. The winner goes to the semi-final.

No net run rate calculation, no dependence on another result, no permutations. An Associate side plays a Full Member, and the winner is in the last four of a senior continental tournament.

The UAE got there by beating Indonesia by six wickets on 4 September, chasing 73. Bangladesh hold the NRR advantage at +1.677 against −0.854, which matters only if the match ends without a result.

Indonesia, on debut

Indonesia finished 0-3 and were comfortably beaten in each: 58 all out against Bangladesh, 49 against Sri Lanka, 73 against the UAE. They did not pass 73 in three innings.

It would be easy to file that as a gap in standard and move on. The more useful framing is that this was a first appearance at this level, against two Full Members and an Associate side with far more T20I cricket behind it. The scores are the price of entry, not a verdict — and the alternative to playing those fixtures is not playing at all, which is how Associate programmes stay where they are.

What happens next

• Semi-final 1 — 10 September. India v the Group B runner-up.
• Semi-final 2 — 11 September. Sri Lanka v the Group A runner-up.
• Final — 13 September.

Every match is at the Dubai International Stadium.

So if the UAE beat Bangladesh, they play India in the first semi-final — the side that has won its three matches by 94 runs, 137 runs and seven wickets. Nobody would call that a likely win. It would still be the furthest an Associate side has gone in this competition in a long time, and the sort of fixture that decides whether a board gets another year of funding.
