Big hundreds are cricket’s cathedrals — years of talent expressed in one enormous day. Here are the highest individual scores across every format as of 2026, and why some of these numbers have survived for decades.

Highest Test scores

ScorePlayerMatchYear
400*Brian Lara (West Indies)vs England, Antigua2004
380Matthew Hayden (Australia)vs Zimbabwe, Perth2003
375Brian Lara (West Indies)vs England, Antigua1994
374Mahela Jayawardene (Sri Lanka)vs South Africa, Colombo2006
365*Garry Sobers (West Indies)vs Pakistan, Kingston1958
364Len Hutton (England)vs Australia, The Oval1938
340Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka)vs India, Colombo1997

Brian Lara is the only player in 150 years to reach 400 in a Test — and the only one to break the record twice, both times at Antigua’s Recreation Ground against England. When Hayden took his 375 with a 380 against Zimbabwe, Lara simply took it back six months later.

Jayawardene’s 374 came during the record partnership in Test history: 624 with Kumar Sangakkara against South Africa in 2006 — a stand longer than most complete team innings.

Highest ODI scores

ScorePlayerMatchYear
264Rohit Sharma (India)vs Sri Lanka, Kolkata2014
237*Martin Guptill (New Zealand)vs West Indies, World Cup QF2015
219Virender Sehwag (India)vs West Indies2011
215Chris Gayle (West Indies)vs Zimbabwe, World Cup2015
210*Fakhar Zaman (Pakistan)vs Zimbabwe2018
210Ishan Kishan (India)vs Bangladesh2022
200*Sachin Tendulkar (India)vs South Africa — the first ODI double century2010

The double century was considered physically impossible in 50-over cricket for four decades — then Sachin Tendulkar broke the barrier in 2010, and the floodgates opened. Rohit Sharma now owns the summit at 264, and remains the only player with three ODI double hundreds. A special mention for Glenn Maxwell’s 201 not out against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup — the only ODI double century ever made in a run chase, batting on one functioning leg through full-body cramps.

Highest T20 scores

  • T20 internationals: Aaron Finch (Australia) — 172 vs Zimbabwe, 2018
  • All T20 cricket: Chris Gayle — 175 not out off 66 balls, RCB vs Pune Warriors, IPL 2013, including the fastest century in T20 history (30 balls)
  • Highest T20I team total: Nepal — 314/3 vs Mongolia, 2023 Asian Games, the innings that also produced Dipendra Singh Airee’s 9-ball fifty

The unbeatable one: 501 not out

In June 1994 — seven weeks after scoring 375 in a Test — Brian Lara made 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham at Edgbaston: the only quintuple century in the history of first-class cricket, scored in a single day and a bit, with the field spread and history the only opponent left. First-class cricket’s shrinking calendar means the chances of anyone getting the time to score 500 again round to zero.

Women’s cricket’s tallest peak

The highest score in women’s ODIs is Amelia Kerr’s 232 not out for New Zealand against Ireland in 2018, scored at age 17 — alongside which she took five wickets in the match, one of the great all-round performances in any cricket.
